The Nevada Physician Advisory Council, led by founding member Dr. Joseph Adashek, donated $10,000 to Baby’s Bounty this week.  Baby’s Bounty is a local nonprofit organization that provides clothing and baby supplies to newborns of low-income families.  This generous donation will help provide the basic necessities like a safe place to sleep, clothing, and even diapers to these families in need.  To read more about this story, released August 22, 2011 on Fox 5 News, click here.

Desert Perinatal Associates was honored this month to have five of our highly qualified physicians nominated to the “Top Doctors” list in Southern Nevada.  Dr. Adashek, Dr. Wilkes, Dr. Pierce, Dr. Bolnick, and Dr. Vo were selected to this list with Dr. Adashek being named as one of the featured doctors in the magazine.

When Karen Manuel was only 23 weeks into her pregnancy, she was informed that her baby girl would have to be delivered early or risk losing her. Karen and her husband Gary welcomed their baby girl, Sadie Ann into the world on September 9, 2010 instead of her due date of January 1, 2011.

Dr. Paul Wilkes performed the C-section and likened it to removing the seed from an avocado. Because Karen was only 23 weeks pregnant at the time, Sadie Ann weighed less than 1 lb at delivery. Dr. Wilkes said she was so tiny, he was able to scoop her out with one hand and compared her size to that of a bird. Nine days later she had heart surgery and numerous blood transfusions. Doctors informed the Manuel’s that Sadie Ann’s chances of survival were small, but they never gave up hope. “This is exceptional that a baby that size with that many problems from conception to the time of delivery would survive,” said D. Wilkes.

We’re happy to announce that Sadie Ann is now a thriving 7 month old and weighs more than 14 lbs. Although she is a few months behind developmentally, the Manuel’s are happy to be celebrating their first Mother’s Day! To read the whole story click on this link:  Miracle Baby

Did you know that approximately 1 in 3,300 Caucasian children in the U.S. have Cystic Fibrosis? CF is a common genetic condition in individuals of Caucasian and Hispanic ancestry. It is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system. A defective gene causes the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that can lead to lung infections or a blockage in the pancreas, which stops the natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food. Although there is no cure for CF, advances in research and medical treatments have extended life for individuals with CF.

In July 2008, Desert Perinatal was directly impacted by CF when a staff member (Misty Thomas) gave birth to Mckenna, who was diagnosed with CF at only 2 months old. The CF Panel was added to the Nevada PKU in May of 2008, making it possible to diagnose Mckenna much earlier than the previous age of 4-5. Earlier detection means earlier treatment and a better quality of life. Daily treatment includes Airway Clearance Vest Therapy twice daily with nebulizer treatments, as well as enzymes taken with every meal to help with digestion of meals. At night, a feeding tube helps her receive an 8 hour feed of a special pre-digested formula.

Currently, there is no government funding provided for the CF Foundation, so those affected rely on others to donate in order to further research. How can you help? Help us make health & safety a reality for all Vegas babies!

September is National Baby Safety Month and we of course are all about making sure every baby is happy, healthy and safe from conception to delivery to life after birth.  Unfortunately some in our local community do not have the resources to make this ideal a reality.  That is why we are teaming up with our friends at the Sher Institute for Reproductive Medicine to have our first annual “Vegas Baby Bonanza”.

We encourage our patients and any valley residents to drop off their gently used baby items and children’s clothing for two local charities, Baby’s Bounty and Safe Nest.  In return for the donations, residents will get to take part in the free Vegas Baby Bonanza at Belly Bliss.

Vegas Baby Bonanza is a celebration of all things baby in Vegas, baby!

You can learn about everything from vaccinations, lactation, in vitro fertilization, childbirthing, etc.
Doctors from Desert Perinatal and Sher Institute will be on hand from 11am-1pm to answer any special questions.

Safe Kids Clark County will also be holding their monthly free car seat check in the parking lot of Belly Bliss from 9am-12pm.

We will have free raffle prizes including spa treatments.

Light refreshments will be served.

So bring your baby and your baby gear and help us make baby safety a reality for all Vegas babies.
